What is a NdFeB Magnet
A neodymium magnet (also known as NdFeB, NIB, or Neo magnet) is the most widely used type of rare-earth magnet. It is a permanent magnet made from an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron to form the Nd2Fe14B tetragonal crystalline structure. Neodymium magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnet available commercially.
Advantages of NdFeB Magnets
The main advantages of NdFeB magnets are as follows:
- Best power to weight ratio of all magnets
- High resistance to demagnetization
- Often the most cost-effective choice
- Ideal for restricted space or compact applications.
- Can be used in extremely cold conditions (e.g. in liquid nitrogen).
- High coercivity (Hci) to resist demagnetization.
- NdFeB magnets have stronger corrosion resistance.
Disadvantages of NdFeB Magnets
- Requires a protective coating to prevent the iron in the alloy from corroding (rusting).
- NxxT and L-NxxT alloys are much more expensive and will still show signs of corrosion.
- Higher temperature versions contain more Dy element increasing their cost.
- Nd and Dy prices affect the production cost.
- Above 150-180°C (302-356°F), SmCo may be better.

Bonded NdFeB magnet is mainly used in sensor, brushless motor, automotive electronic gas pedal, automotive instrumentation, automotive instrumentation drive, automotive tachometer, fuel gauge and other fields.

How Are NdFeB Magnets Made?
There are several processes for making magnets, but the most common method is called Powder Metallurgy. In this process, a suitable composition is pulverized into a fine powder, compacted, and heated to cause densification via “liquid phase sintering”. Therefore, these magnets are most often called sintered magnets.
